During the recent recession in 2008, I co-managed the Bountiful Food Pantry, an all-volunteer organization that was serving 1,000 or more families each month. Many of our clients turned to the pantry as their last resort.
These people weren't gaming the system or refusing to work; they were our neighbors for whom the bottom had dropped out. Many lost their jobs; some their homes. Without question, most lost their dignity and pride and were desperate to put food on the table for their children, keep a roof over their heads, or to afford vital medical care.
It was truly disturbing to hear Lara Trump, President Trump's daughter-in-law, issue the statement that workers are going through “a little bit of pain.” But, she said, the pain is “for the future of our country and their children and their grandchildren.” She insisted that “generations after them will thank them for their sacrifice right now.”
Until the self-absorbed, entitled, spoiled brats of this world have walked in the these people's shoes and obtained at least a little empathy, they should keep their mouths shut.
