I called Sen. Mitt Romney’s office to express my opinion on several issues, including the bill on the Senate floor to block the administration from lifting the sanctions on businesses belonging to the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who has been implicated in interfering with our 2016 election.
The lady I spoke with assured me that Romney was of the same opinion and that we were “on the same page.” Imagine my surprise when, several hours later, I turned on the news to learn that Romney had, in fact, voted against the bill, thereby lifting the sanctions!
I felt angry and betrayed. Romney has declared for years that Russia is our country’s biggest threat. There were 11 Republican senators who supported the bill, but Romney was not among them. He fell right in step with Trump and McConnell.
So much for his assurances that he would vote against Trump when he is wrong. There is no justification for Romney’s vote. He could have established himself as an independent senator and statesman. Instead, he has demonstrated himself to be a coward and an embarrassment to Utah.
