The president of the United States has backed himself into a corner. Shutting down the government and holding the federal workforce hostage is a mean-spirited political weapon. It shows a distinct lack of character.
The president has twisted the facts and grossly distorted the statistics about the border situation in order to fabricate a crisis to justify declaring a national emergency.
It is time for him to take his foot off the neck of the federal government. Its dedicated workers and the populace in general are feeling the ramifications of this disastrous situation.
To quote Ronald Reagan, the president needs to “tear down the wall.” He needs to show the character and leadership expected of the occupant of the Oval Office.
He can do so by opening the government and negotiating in good faith to resolve the border security/immigration issue. Failure to do this will almost certainly ensure his defeat in 2020.
