“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” — The First Amendment
A free press is one of the cornerstones that our country was founded upon. The press should be able to report without fear of reprisal or death.
So, when Chris Stewart says “journalists disappear all the time” (Tribune, Dec. 5), he says words that no American should ever say, especially those who profess to be our leaders. He should be shouting from the rooftops to defend the murdered journalist regardless of the perpetrator.
The modern Republican Party is morally bankrupt. Along with a multitude of horrible behaviors, they condone mocking disabled journalists, discrediting journalists that they don’t agree with, including doctoring video to force their narrative and, with this statement by a member of the House of Representatives, they openly condone the murder and dismemberment of a journalist. All of these actions directly oppose the idea of a free press.
Stewart and the rest of the Republicans who claim to be our leaders do not represent the people of this country or the honor of this country. They only represent that which will make them and their rich donors even more rich, and they are willing to destroy the people and everything this country stands for to do that.
