Letter: These Utahns go the extra mile to make people smile

I read the op-ed section daily in the Trib, and the amount of rancor and divisiveness appears to only be increasing. I am as guilty as the next in contributing to it. Every once in a while, I mute the “outrage alarm” and see things clearly.

Luckily, there exist two examples in our fair burg that deserve to be seen clearly and appreciated.

The first is the house on a corner of Creek Road in Cottonwood Heights and its Halloween skeleton skit for a few weeks in October. Each day the residents of this house rearranged about four or five skeletons, and a skeleton dog, in their front yard with a running theme from day to day. One day had the skeletons in a car accident, next day in jail, and the next day busting out of jail. I drove 8 miles out of route daily to see the latest skeleton “dilemma.” Very funny and imaginative.

The second must-see example are the two gentlemen who each Fourth of July and Veterans Day line the overpass on 4500 South and I-215 in Millcreek with American flags and then stand at attention saluting to the north and south. Everyone who drives past on the overpass gives a long honk of acknowledgment. Sounds sort of corny, but it’s a stirring little tribute/reminder.

If you want to feel good about the world for a minute, avail yourself of each of these displays. You will leave smiling and possibly have a warm thought about your fellow Utahns.
