Letter: Experience tells me we still have not reached King’s goal

(Charles Kelly | The Associated Press) In this April 3, 1968, file photo, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. makes his last public appearance at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tenn. The following day King was assassinated on his motel balcony. Travelers will find a variety of events and sites in Memphis and elsewhere honoring King's legacy on the 50th anniversary of his death.

I was privileged to have Hosea Williams as the commencement speaker when I earned my master’s degree at New Mexico Highlands University, a primarily Latino university.

I am proud to have graduated from a university where I, as a white person, was a minority.

In February, I was thrilled to travel to USU to hear Angela Davis.

These are all experiences that have greatly enriched my life, but they have made it clear to me that we still have not reached King’s goal. I too hope for a day when people are judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
