Letter: Releasing water in surges requires knowing its impact downstream

I recently watched a television show from Flaming Gorge Dam. They interviewed some ranchers and farmers from the area below the dam. Once they decided to release water in surges they caused erosion of the banks along the river that probably can never be recovered.

They showed where one farmer had lost over 10 acres of ground and other ranches where their land had been so severely flooded they can’t even grow a crop of hay on that land.

The point being is the state or government hiring such dumb people that if they have a good reason for releasing surges of water, then they better check how that will affect people downstream and warn the people to shore up their banks and even help them before releasing the water in surges.

Let’s start requiring some accountability from people in charge from making stupid decisions.
