Letter: About those ‘coal-powered’ cars …

(Koji Sasahara | The Associated Press) In this Nov. 13, 2017 photo, visitors take a look at a Toyota car at its showroom in Tokyo. Toyota plans to offer more than 10 purely electric vehicle models in its lineup by the early 2020s, marking the Japanese automaker's commitment to that growing technology sector. Toyota Motor Corp. now offers no purely electric vehicles, although it leads in hybrid models, which switch between an electric motor and a gas engine.

In the Feb. 21 Public Forum, Kermit Heid posited that electric-car drivers may not know that the electricity they use to power their cars comes from coal-fired generating plants operating at 30 percent efficiency.

I can guess, too, that Heid may not know that he is a Republican, and that he would never blame our air pollution on the coal-fired plants around Utah. I wish he had attended the Liberty Wells Solar Panel Tour. It was a very astute idea, and it was very well attended. Since that event, several other homes on our street now sport solar panels.

Before we bought our Nissan Leaf, we planned to put solar panels on our garage so we would not pollute the air with our Zero Emission Leaf. As it turned out, we put enough panels on our house to make all our electricity coal-free.

Visit Bill McKibben’s website, 350.org. Look into that, Utahns! Don’t point fingers. Do something!
