The Salt Lake Tribune is searching for a community member to join its editorial board.

As a nonprofit news organization, we are committed to publishing journalism that’s more reflective of our community and that builds understanding.

One of the ways we try to do this is through the editorial board, a small group that meets weekly to discuss Utah’s most pressing issues and provide a longer view, in the form of a published editorial, on where we’re headed. Or where Utah should be headed.

Oftentimes, the editorial board is joined by guests who have expertise in certain areas, from education and government to the environment and transportation.

Opinion writer George Pyle crafts one or more editorials, which are published across Tribune platforms throughout the week, after the board meets.

On our best days, we elevate an exchange of information and ideas. We seek to ground them in longtime principles of The Tribune, such as transparency and accountability.

We will welcome a volunteer (or two!) who is eager to participate in a conversation about what’s important to Utahns. You should be curious and knowledgeable about how our state works, though you need not have a Ph.D. in Utah history. You should have a willingness to ask questions and you must be open to considering a multitude of perspectives. Being a good listener is critical.

The board, which is separate from the newsroom, typically meets for one hour on Wednesday afternoons. Some meetings are in person, others are virtual. The position is not paid, and the commitment would be for a one-year term on the board. You must live in Utah.

Please complete this form by April 30 if you are interested.

Because we don’t know how much interest we’ll get, we may not be able to get back to everyone who applies.

The Salt Lake Tribune is committed to creating a space where Utahns can share ideas, perspectives and solutions that move our state forward. We rely on your insight to do this. Find out how to share your opinion here, and email us at voices@sltrib.com.
