Votes are still being tabulated but Democrats are on their way regaining control of the Salt Lake County Council.

The partisan panel is currently led 5-4 by Republicans, and the last time the council was majority Democrat was in 2010.

Here is how each of the four races on the ballot this year are shaking out based on unofficial returns from the Salt Lake County clerk’s office:

At-large ‘A’

Democrat Zach Robinson claimed victory after he secured a commanding lead with 64.7% of the vote, while Republican Kathleen Anderson and Constitution Party candidate Gregory Beglarian had captured 33.2% and 2.2% of the vote, respectively, according to unofficial returns at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

“I’ve spent the past year traveling across the county to speak with voters, support fellow candidates and talk with neighbors about the real issues facing Salt Lake County families,” Robinson said in a statement on social media. “What I heard is that they’re looking for leaders who will take on tough challenges and get results, and that’s exactly what I’ve done throughout my career in public service.”

Robinson ran on investing in the programs and services county residents rely on, while Anderson campaigned on what she described as bringing common sense and “taxpayer respect” back to county government.

The countywide seat is currently occupied by Laurie Stringham, who has held the position since 2021 but lost at the Salt Lake County Republican nominating convention to Anderson.

Robinson, a former firefighter and paramedic who works in virtual care at University of Utah Health, has served two terms on the Sandy City Council, according to his website. Anderson is a small business owner and self-described “community leader,” according to her website. Beglarian has served as a school bus driver in Canyons School District for the past decade, and is a frequent attendee at local public hearings, he said.

District 1

Democratic incumbent Jiro Johnson has garnered 86.6% of the vote, while Libertarian challenger Casey Poe held 13.4% of the vote, according to Tuesday night’s unofficial returns.

District 1, the council’s most liberal district, includes most of Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake, along with a northeastern section of West Valley City. Johnson was appointed to the seat in 2025 after former council member Arlyn Bradshaw resigned to join Mayor Jenny Wilson’s administration

Johnson works as assistant director for the county’s public defender office, while Poe manages the English Language Institute at the University of Utah. Johnson campaigned on criminal justice reform and responsible growth, while Poe ran to limit unnecessary government intrusion and encourage tax cuts after the county approved a nearly 15% property tax hike last year.

District 3

Democrat Luke Maynes held a sizable lead with 59.3% of the vote over Republican Mike Bird, who captured 40.7% of the vote, early returns showed.

Republican Aimee Winder Newton has represented District 3 — which includes Taylorsville, Murray and parts of West Valley City and West Jordan — since 2014, but decided not to run for reelection earlier this year.

Bird works as an operations director at University of Utah Health, and lost a close race for a spot in the Utah House of Representatives in 2024. Maynes is a project manager at tech advertising company Boostability and serves on the Midvale Community Council.

District 5

Republican Traci Crockett has captured an early lead with 52.9% of the vote against Democrat Sara Cimmers, who held 47.1%, according to early returns.

District 5 includes all of Bluffdale and Riverton, and parts of four other cities: West Jordan, South Jordan, Herriman and Draper. Republican Sheldon Stewart has represented the area since 2023, but announced he would not run for reelection earlier this year.

Crockett, a real estate agent, previously represented a portion of the district on the Bluffdale City Council. Cimmers, a former educator, also works as a real estate agent. She ran for Utah House District 45 in 2024, but lost to Republican Rep. Tracy Miller in the general election.
