With the departure of Donald Trump from the White House, a Utah County conservative organization has been gathering funds to purchase a billboard thanking the former president for his four years in office.
Earlier this week, the Utah County Conservatives created a GoFundMe page, stating that all funds raised will go to a billboard placed in Utah County for a month. The proposed billboard would end with the signoff, “Love, the patriots of Utah.”
“We at Utah County Conservatives love, respect, and have supported President Trump throughout his presidency,” a representative of the organization told The Tribune, declining to give a name out of concern for safety. The person said some individuals in the group have been harassed because of their support for Trump.
“With President Trump leaving office, we wanted to show him that his efforts over the past four years will not go unnoticed or unappreciated. All we wanted to do with making this billboard is show President Trump that we are truly grateful for him,” the person said.
While Trump won Utah’s presidential election 58% to 38%, Utah County favored Trump by a much larger margin, 68% to 27% for President Joe Biden.
To date, over $3,700 has been raised, surpassing the group’s original goal of $3,500. Donations range from $10 to over $300 per donor.
“The support we’ve received so far has been outstanding. We’ve been contacted by many individuals who love this idea and are happy to show their support,” the organization representative said.
The Utah County Conservatives group anticipates it will continue to receive support once the billboard is in place and is working on raising money to purchase a second billboard in Salt Lake County.
Salt Lake County, the state’s largest, was far less favorable toward Trump than was its southern neighbor. Biden bested Trump in Salt Lake County 54% to 43%.
