A community activist and former Republican, Jonia Broderick, announced on Tuesday her campaign to represent Utah’s 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“In recent years, I have become disillusioned by the divisiveness and rancor that have filled the political arena,” said Broderick in a video announcing her candidacy.
She said that for some candidates, “it seems that they care more about political parties than principles, more than team victory, than moral victory.” Broderick said now is the time for new voices not aligned with either major political party to step forward.
“Principles matter. Facts matter. Truth matters. The Constitution matters. Most importantly, people matter.”
During the contentious presidential election in 2016, Broderick left the Republican Party to campaign and vote for a third-party candidate.
She is running on a platform that emphasizes investment in the future, fair treatment for all, a functioning government and principles first. She wants to restructure the nation’s tax system, pay down the federal debt, improve the efficiency of entitlement programs and promote health care reforms.
Broderick also hopes to empower states to improve their education systems, address the student loan crisis, support climate change legislation and responsibly protect the right to bear arms.
She also wants Congress to direct the Justice Department to provide oversight on police violence investigations and to protect the voting rights of minority groups.
