AAA is offering free towing home for those who ring in the New Year with too much alcohol.
It is offering its Tipsy Tow service from 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day. It is available by calling 1-800-AAA-HELP.
“We urge New Year’s Eve revelers to have a sober ride home lined up before the ball drops. If those plans fall through, AAA’s Tipsy Tow will not only provide a safe ride home for you and a passenger, but we’ll get your vehicle home safely, too,” said Michael Blasky, spokesman for AAA Utah.
Tipsy Tow provides a free ride home and vehicle tow of up to 10 miles for any driver, not just AAA members. For mileage beyond that, motorists are charged a standard towing rate.
Services will not be provided to motorist requesting a tow to another drinking establishment, repair facility or any location other than their home or a hotel.
AAA estimates that a first-time DUI conviction can cost a motorist more than $10,000 in fines, penalties, legal fees and increased insurance costs.
This holiday is also the first with Utah’s new toughest-in-the-nation drunken driving law, which takes effect on Sunday. It lowers the blood alcohol content where a driver is presumed drunk from 0.08 to 0.05.
