A 2-month-old cairn terrier that was stolen from the Utah Humane Society last week was found safe in Idaho on Friday.
Security camera footage from the adoption center at 4242 S. 300 West in Murray showed a woman and two boys around 8 or 10 years old with the puppy, whose name is Cookie, on Thursday afternoon. The woman appeared to place the dog in her handbag, then put a white jacket over her to conceal her.
The next day, the Meridian City Police Department pulled a man and woman over on suspicion of driving under the influence and directed local animal control to take the dog that was with them. That’s when the Idaho Humane Society in Boise, Idaho, scanned for a microchip that was traced back to the Humane Society in Utah.
“We were ecstatic when we heard the news that Cookie had been found safe,” said Deann Shepherd, the director of marketing and communications for the Humane Society of Utah, in a news release, noting that she is “happy and healthy.”
The woman who was arrested on Friday didn’t match the description of the person the Humane Society of Utah suspected may have taken Cookie. Shepherd said it’s unclear whether the person who took the dog gave her away to avoid being caught.
The Humane Society of Utah has taken steps to increase security following the incident, according to the news release, and is collaborating with the Idaho Humane Society to transport Cookie home.
