After a nearly monthlong search to fill its vacancy, the Davis School District appointed former Kaysville City Council member Michelle Barber as its new board of education member Tuesday night.
Barber was one of five candidates who school board and community members interviewed during the Tuesday meeting. She is currently the chair of the Kaysville City Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and has served in school community councils and PTAs at her children’s Layton schools, along with a school library committee at one of her children’s schools that reviews books, according to a release from the district.
“I will forever be an advocate for teachers and appreciate their efforts to educate and support our children,” Barber wrote in a cover letter to the district, adding that her mother has been teaching high school in the district since she attended.
At Tuesday night’s board meeting, she added, “One of the things I think is really important is equipping teachers to provide individual experiences, making sure they have the tools and resources necessary to provide a well-balanced education.”
Barber’s appointment comes after former board member Derek Lamb in early November resigned from his post over the district’s Precinct 5, which covers areas in Clearfield, Hill Air Force Base, Kaysville, Layton and Sunset. He had served on the board for roughly 10 months.
Lamb told board members that it was “not the right time nor a good fit for me in my life right now” to serve on the board. Further details about his decision were not released.
His resignation triggered the district’s policy to fill the spot within 30 days. The district had accepted applications for the vacancy until Nov. 20. Public interviews, and the final vote, concluded Tuesday.
Barber will be sworn in during the school board’s Dec. 5 meeting.
