Davis School District board member Derek Lamb resigns; replacement search begins

Lamb said the role was not a “good fit for me in my life right now.”

After roughly 10 months in the role, Derek Lamb formally resigned Thursday from his seat on the Davis School District Board of Education, immediately launching the district into a bid to replace him.

Lamb told board members earlier this week that it is “not the right time nor a good fit for me in my life right now” to serve on the board, according to a news release Thursday. Further details about his decision were not immediately released.

The board accepted Lamb’s resignation at Thursday night’s meeting, the district announced in the release.

Lamb, a board member since January 2023, oversaw Precinct 5 in the school district, which covers areas in Clearfield, Hill Air Force Base, Kaysville, Layton and Sunset.

He served on the Davis Technical College Committee, the Davis Council of Governments Committee, and the school board’s Finance Committee, as well as a delegate to the Utah School Boards Association.

Outside of his district role, Lamb is a Maxwell Leadership-certified success and life coach, according to his LinkedIn profile. When reached by phone Friday morning, Lamb declined to comment on his resignation to The Salt Lake Tribune.

School district spokesperson Christopher Williams said Friday that officials did not have further information about Lamb’s resignation.

“We express our gratitude for Mr. Lamb’s service,” said board President Liz Mumford in a statement. “Derek has a strong interest in the work of schools, and we appreciated his wisdom and insights he brought to the board. We recognize the impact of changing personal circumstances and wish him the best.”

Lamb’s resignation triggered a procedural effort to replace him, which must be done within 30 days, according to district policy. Board members must also give public notice of a vacancy “at least two weeks” before officials meet to fill the spot.

Those interested in being appointed to Lamb’s seat must submit a letter of intent, resume, and a notarized Declaration of Candidacy form to the school district by noon on Nov. 20.

Board members will then interview candidates during a Nov. 28 open meeting at 6 p.m., with the final appointment occurring later in that meeting, during open session.
