The Utah Department of Public Safety displayed 41 motorcycles on the steps of the Utah State Capitol on Tuesday, representing each of the lives lost in 2016 to motorcycle crashes, and kicking off a program to increase drivers' awareness of motorcycles.
The Utah Highway Patrol hopes the "Look Twice, Save a Life" campaign will serve as a reminder to drivers to be more conscientious as motorcycle riding season begins and decrease the fatality rate, a UHP news release said. Billboards advertising the campaign are being posted throughout the state, the release said.
In 2016, 41 motorcyclists died on Utah roads, the release said. More than half of those crashes involved another vehicle and a third involved vehicles that hit motorcyclists turning left.
In 2015, there were 36 motorcycle deaths, the release said, and in 2014, there were 45.
