Man critically injured in Salt Lake City police shooting

He was shot after fleeing from police who tried to talk to him.

One person was critically injured in an officer-involved shooting near Smith's Ballpark.

The incident began about 4 p.m. Sunday when two officers stopped a male on the sidewalk to talk to him near 1340 S. Main Street, said Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Heiden. At some point, the male ran and the officer pursued him, she said.

After a short chase, shots were fired on the 1300 South block of Major Street — which is between Main Street and State Street — and the male was hit, Heiden said. The male was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

No officers were injured.

Heiden could not immediately say whether the male was armed, how many shots were fired, or who fired at whom. Heiden also could not immediately say what the officers wanted to talk to the male about.

Two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. The West Valley City Police Department will be investigating the shooting.
