Rolling Stones settle insurance dispute over death of Mick Jagger's girlfriend that reached into Utah

Lawsuit • Rock group upset over exposure of personal information in court filings.

The Rolling Stones have settled a lawsuit in London over an insurance claim related to the suicide of Mick Jagger's girlfriend L'Wren Scott — a case that reached into Utah where Scott grew up.

British newspapers reported that the legendary rock group settled the lawsuit in which it was trying to collect $12.7 million in insurance for the costs incurred when it postponed a concert tour following Scott's suicide in New York in March of this year.

The case had reached federal court in Utah when insurance underwriters who were contesting the claim sought evidence from Scott's brother over her mental condition and any treatments she had received before the suicide. The underwriters contended that the policy did not cover events that could be foreseen because of pre-existing mental health issues and treatments and that Scott's death was not beyond her control.

A spokesperson for the rock group said late last week that the lawsuit had been settled but did not provide details.

"We are deeply upset that confidential medical and other private information about members of the band and their immediate family and loved ones has entered the public domain as a result of a U.S. court filing initiated by insurers four weeks ago," British newspapers quoted a spokesperson as saying. "This was done without the knowledge of the band or reference to their legal representatives."

The spokesperson said the suit had been settled even before press reports were published about the legal dispute, which also included filings in federal court in New York.

Scott, a renowned fashion designer who also turned heads as a 6-foot-3 fashion model, was born in Salt Lake City in 1964 and graduated from Roy High School. Her body was found March 17 in her New York City apartment kneeling with a scarf around her throat that was tied to a door knob, news reports said.
