Midvale • Salt Lake Valley plant lovers have reason to celebrate. Cactus & Tropicals, a Utah plant store and garden center that provides horticultural services, has opened its third location.
The new shop is located in Midvale’s historic downtown at 7696 S. Main St. — a location that might be familiar to movie buffs. The building used to be a saloon, then became Vincent Drug before appearing in Hollywood films like “The Sandlot” and installments of the “Halloween” series.
Cactus & Tropicals’ other locations are in Salt Lake City and Draper.
The new location held a “soft opening” Friday, with freebies available to early shoppers through the store’s opening weekend. The first 50 people to visit Saturday and Sunday will receive free 4-inch succulents. The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Brit LeFevre, the store manager of the Midvale location, said the local business has been scouting for a third location for “a long time.”
“When this opportunity came up, it’s just such a cool area, like, perfect middle-of-the-valley,” LeFevre said, “[with] so many exciting things happening here, we just couldn’t pass this up.”
Cactus & Tropicals opened in 1975 and offers a variety of services for plant lovers, from selling plants to creating arrangements and hosting classes.
LeFevre said the Midvale location is the smallest of the three stores, but is the most “unique.”
“The setting is different than the other two,” she said, “with the streetfront urban setting, and then the greenhouse in the back.”
The new shop kept as much of the drugstore’s original structure intact as possible, like the tile and exposed brick walls. The greenhouse is a new addition so the store can grow plants.
After searching for a long time, LeFevre said it feels “surreal” to finally be opening a third location.
