Two men died in downtown Salt Lake City early Tuesday morning, in what police say are the city’s first and second homicides of 2025.

According to a news release from the Salt Lake City police, dispatchers received a 911 call at about 12:33 a.m. near 171 W. 500 South, near the Comfort Inn Downtown, reporting a shooting.

Officers arriving at the scene found two men with gunshot wounds, the news release said. Officers tried to treat the men and called for paramedics, but both men died at the scene.

Police said they have taken a “person of interest” into custody, adding that “officers do not believe there is a threat to our community.”

Police have not released the identities of the dead men or the person in custody. The department and the medical examiner’s office will confirm the dead men’s identities and notify their next of kin, the news release said.

A police official said investigators were still on the scene around 9 a.m. Tuesday, and that it likely would be a day or two before police release more information. Police asked people to avoid the sidewalk along the south side of 500 South between West Temple and 200 West until the investigation is completed.

Salt Lake City saw 12 homicides in 2024, out of 100 statewide. The first homicide of 2024 happened on Jan. 14.
