Clinton police officers shot and killed a man after apparent ‘mental health episode,’ Davis Co. Sheriff’s Office says

According to a news release, officers tried de-escalating and using non-lethal force.

Two Clinton police officers shot and killed a man in a West Point home, after responding to a call over a “domestic issue,” the Clinton police and Davis County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday in a news release.

The man, Nathan Paul, 43, died at the scene Monday evening, the release said. The two officers have been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation being led by the Davis County Attorney’s Office.

A Davis County Sheriff’s deputy spoke with Paul’s family Monday evening and determined he “was possibly suffering a mental health episode,” the release said.

The sheriff’s office also reported that deputies had been called to the house the night before “for similar concerns” and that “Paul was treated at a local area hospital” on Sunday.

Stephanie Dinsmore, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, did not immediately respond as to what specifically caused Paul’s injuries that led to his hospitalization.

When responding to the call Monday, at about 8:12 p.m., the Davis County deputy and the two Clinton officers “encountered” Paul, who was reportedly armed, the release said.

Officers tried to “de-escalate the situation both verbally and with two non-lethal options,” the release said, but those methods “were ineffective.” Then the Clinton officers shot and killed Paul.

“No additional details will be released until the investigation is complete,” the release said.

Dinsmore did not immediately respond to a question asking how many officers in total responded Monday.
