Firefighters work to put out blaze in Salt Lake City

The fire in a vacant building produced a plume of smoke visible in much of the city.

Salt Lake City firefighters worked Thursday to knock down a fire that hit a reportedly vacant building south of downtown, sending up a plume of smoke visible to much of the city.

No one was hurt or killed in the fire at the vacant building at 1030 S. 200 West, Chief Bob Silverthorne said. A building north of the site was evacuated, he said.

By about 2:45 p.m., he said the fire was largely under control and firefighters were being released from the scene.

“We’re kind of like in overhaul/demobilization mode,” he said. “We’re in kind of a mop-up stage right now. It’s going to be a minute.”

He said crews have started demolishing the portion of the building that caught fire, allowing firefighters to get their hose streams deeper into the blaze.

Traffic was still blocked off from 900 South to 1300 South, and from West Temple to 300 West, the chief said.
