The person found dead at the site of a house explosion in South Jordan was a 15-year-old boy, city officials said Thursday.
The resident, a student at Bingham High School, was the only person inside the home at the time of the explosion, South Jordan officials said in a news release. Officials are not releasing the boy’s name, at the family’s request.
Emergency crews responded to the explosion and subsequent 2-alarm fire at around 3 p.m. Wednesday. The explosion severely damaged the home at 10593 S. 3210 West. The cause of the explosion is still not known, officials said.

“It’s as significant as it gets,” said Racheal Van Cleave, South Jordan City’s communications manager. The ongoing investigation, Van Cleave said “could take days.”
Two nearby homes, while “structurally sound,” received minor to moderate damage “visible from the outside,” officials said. Residents were evacuated Wednesday but have since returned to their homes, Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner said. An evacuation order was not put in place for the entire neighborhood.
The road in front of the affected property remains closed off for the two investigating teams from the Utah State Fire Marshal and Enbridge Gas, Lessner said. There is no risk to the surrounding community as crews continue their investigations, he said.
City officials have notified the Jordan School District. Counseling resources are being made available for students and family members.
