Fire breaks out at downtown Salt Lake City apartment building

The two-alarm fire broke out at Chateau Normandie, located at 73 S. 400 East.

A fire broke out Friday afternoon at a downtown Salt Lake City apartment building.

Firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze at the four-story Chateau Normandie, at 73 S. 400 East, after receiving an initial alert at 3:20 p.m. The bulk of the fire burned on the third floor, said Bob Silverthorne, a division chief with the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

One person, the only one in the building at the time, suffered minor injuries in the fire and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. It is unknown if the injured person was a building resident.

Firefighters did a comprehensive search after the fire was out, and found the building was otherwise vacant, Silverthorne said.

While surrounding buildings were not evacuated, Silverthorne encouraged pedestrians to stay out of the area.
