Driving through Sugar House is going to become less of a headache next week, at least temporarily.
A massive overhaul of 2100 South, Sugar House’s main artery, began in March, with roadwork expected to continue through 2025.
The street was narrowed to one lane between 900 East and 1100 East on June 17, but city officials say it will reopen to two-way traffic as early as Monday, two weeks ahead of schedule.
Here’s what you need to know:
Which roads are closed and which are open?
City officials warned that when work shifted to the south side of 2100 South this summer, traffic could get restricted a single lane through August as crews work on the area’s water lines. That warning became reality in mid-June as workers began Phase 2 of the project, which calls for extensive work between 1300 East and 1700 East through at least the end of July.
Crews installed a new water line along the roadway quicker than expected, which will allow another lane to open to traffic.
“We’re really pleased with our contractor, Stacy Witbeck,” city engineer Mark Stephens said. “They’ve been able to really efficiently do this work and coordinate with businesses and residences in the area to minimize those impacts.”
For now, drivers must get to businesses by accessing 2100 South westbound, either by taking 1100 East or Highland Drive. Come Monday, drivers can resume two-way use of 2100 South and use the detours during heavy traffic.
Where to park in Sugar House
Amid limited access to the area, city officials have created a map of parking locations in Sugar House so residents can support local businesses. Most free parking is located at least a block away from 2100 South, but there is still parking along the roadway, according to the map.
More information on how to get around amid construction is available on the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce website.
When will construction end?
Frequent travelers of 2100 South aren’t out of the woods just yet. The roadway project is expected to wrap up by the end of 2025, and could see another one-way closure next year.
All paving will along 2100 South between 1100 East and 1300 East is slated for completion by the end of September. Crews will then focus on the western portion of the roadway from 700 East to 1100 East, including a new water line on the north side of that section and rebuilt curbs and gutters.
The new water line is what officials expect will lead to another lane closure closer to the plaza area near 900 East. It’s unclear when the potential closure could take place.
The city’s initial construction timeline, released in March, didn’t account for completely replacing water lines, which will happen alongside other construction.
Officials are working on an updated phasing schedule, but the roadway should still be completely finished by the end of next year.
