3 family members killed in southern Utah collision

Sunday’s fatal crash occurred at milepost 151 on Highway 191; impairment might have been a factor.

Three people were killed Sunday at about 12:16 p.m. when the driver of a white Chevrolet Suburban reportedly crossed the centerline at milepost 151 on Highway 191 north of Moab and crashed into a motorhome towing a passenger vehicle.

The driver of the Suburban, who was southbound, was traveling at “a high rate of speed,” according to UHP.

The victims of the Suburban have been identified as Derik Hurst, 31, the driver; Shandi R Hurst, 28; and a 1-month-old female, from Mancos, Colorado.

According to a statement from the Utah Highway Patrol, the driver and two passengers in the Suburban died. Two other passengers in the Suburban and two occupants in the motorhome were transported to local hospitals, according to UHP.

Troopers are investigating possible impairment as a contributing factor.

A GoFundMe post on social media identified the family as being from Mancos, Colorado. The parents and a three-month-old perished; two other children were hospitalized, according to the post.
