How Salt Lake County kids and teens can get a free rec center pass this year

The “My County Rec Pass” gives kids and teens access to 18 county swimming pools, three ice centers and two climbing walls.

Kids and teens looking to beat the heat this summer can do so for free at Salt Lake County facilities starting this weekend.

The county’s ”My County Rec Pass” program launches Saturday, providing access to 18 county swimming pools, three ice centers and two climbing walls, according to the county. Mayor Jenny Wilson called for funding the program with a $2 million allocation in her budget for 2024.

Kids and teens ages 5 to 18 are eligible for the recreational pass, but kids 9 and under must be accompanied by someone at least 14 years old. Although the program starts this summer, pass holders can also access the free activities during other school breaks, on weekends and after school for the rest of the year, according to the county’s website.

“Our staff wants to welcome more children — hard stop,” Wilson said in a video she posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. “And with that, we will make it work. So we are excited, June 1, the doors will open, and we will celebrate — more kids, no cost.”

Pass holders will also have access to weight rooms, fitness areas, open gym time and walking tracks at the 17 participating recreation centers, but age restrictions for certain activities may apply.

Participants must be residents of Salt Lake County to be eligible for the free pass, and parents can sign them up at any Salt Lake County-operated rec center, according to the county website. The pass includes access to the following centers:
