Police shoot, kill Bluffdale man while responding to medical call

Three officers opened fire, and the man was struck multiple times.

Saratoga Springs officers shot and killed a Bluffdale man Wednesday after police say he pointed a gun at them during a medical call.

Before the police shooting, first responders were called at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to a medical emergency at a Bluffdale home near 15000 South and Castle Valley Drive (3250 West), Saratoga Springs police said. The Saratoga Springs Police Department provides law enforcement services to Bluffdale.

When arriving paramedics and police officers reached a man in a basement bedroom, he reportedly raised a handgun and pointed it at them.

Three officers then fired their guns at the man, whose name has not been released, hitting him multiple times. He was taken to Riverton Hospital, where he died a short time later. No one else was injured.

Police did not say if the man fired his gun, or how many times the officers fired their weapons at him.

The three Saratoga Springs officers who opened fire were placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

This was the second police shooting in Utah this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune. There were 25 police shootings in the state in 2023.
