Are you dreaming of a white Thanksgiving? There’s snow in the forecast.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the northern mountains.

There’s a good chance that Thanksgiving will look sort of like Christmas across much of Utah — there’s snow in the forecast for the northern part of the state.

After sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-40s on Wednesday in the Salt Lake City area, temperatures will reach just 40 on Thursday — and that’ll be overnight, according to the National Weather Service. It’ll drop to the mid-30s by 8 a.m., and snow is likely after 11 a.m. — a 60% chance, with accumulations of less than half an inch possible.

The good news is that the storm is expected to clear out the inversions in northern Utah valleys.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect in the Wasatch Mountains north of Interstate 80 from 2 p.m. Thursday until 5 p.m. Friday. Snow accumulations of 5-10 inches are expected, with gusty winds up to 45 mph. The National Weather Service warns that roads will be slippery and blowing snows could “significantly reduce visibility.”

In the Salt Lake Valley, temperatures will dip to the mid- to upper 20s on Thursday night and the chance of snow will increase to 90%, with accumulations of 2-4 inches possible. There’s a 70% chance of more snow on Friday, mainly before 11 a.m., with accumulations of 1-2 inches possible,

There’s a slight chance the snow will continue on Friday night, but the headline then will be the falling temperatures. The forecast calls for a low of 23 on Friday night, and — although it will be sunny — a high of just 30 on Saturday.

University of Utah football fans will want to keep that in mind when they bundle up for the Utes’ 1 p.m. game against Colorado at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The sunny skies will continue, but it’s only expected to warm up a few degrees in the Salt Lake City area over the following few days. The weather service is forecasting a high of 31 and an overnight low of 23 on Sunday; and 34/26 on Monday.

That’s considerably colder than usual. Average highs in Salt Lake City are 45-47 for this time of year.

Temperatures will be pretty close to normal in southern Utah, and considerably warmer than in northern Utah. The National Weather Service is forecasting highs in the low 60s in St. George on Wednesday, falling to the upper 50s on Thanksgiving. It’ll be cloudy on Thursday, with a 30% chance of rain on Thursday night and a 20% chance on Friday.A high of 56 and a low of 32 is expected on Friday; 51/30 on Saturday; 52/28 on Sunday; and 54/29 on Monday.
