Police shoot, kill Utah man who threatened officers with swords

Police have released no information about the man who was killed.

Police shot and killed a man who they say threatened officers with swords in Cottonwood Heights on Tuesday night.

Officers first responded at about 11 p.m. to a report of domestic violence at a home near 200 East and Fort Union Boulevard in Midvale. As officers arrived, a man drove away from the home, and police followed him to Covecreek Circle, a cul de sac in Cottonwood Heights.

The man then got out of the car carrying two swords, which he brandished at Unified Police Department and Cottonwood Heights officers, police said.

The officers deployed a Taser on the man, but he did not stop, police said. Police then shot the man, who died at the scene.

Police have not identified the man killed. They have also not said how many officers opened fire on him, how many shots were fired and how many times the man was shot.

No officers were injured. The shooting remains under investigation, and any officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, police said. No further details were released.

This marked the 20th police shooting in Utah this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
