A police pursuit ended in a deadly crash early Sunday in Salt Lake City, prompting police to invoke the “officer involved critical incident” protocol, according to a news release.
One person was killed in the crash, which happened near 900 South and 1100 East after the driver failed to navigate the roundabout, authorities said.
The investigation began at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday, when 911 dispatchers received reports about a shooting that had just happened near 900 South and State Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they saw a car speed away east on 900 South.
The release said that based on what preliminary information officers had at the time, they believed the two people in the car had been involved in the shooting.
Officers pursued the car after the driver refused to pull over, the release said.
During the chase along 900 South, the car rolled over and crashed in the 9th and 9th neighborhood. Officers didn’t use a “PIT maneuver” or utilize any other interventions to try to stop the car, the release said.
Police didn’t use firearms during the pursuit, and no officers were injured, the release said.
Both the second person in the car and the shooting victim were taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening. Neither person was identified Sunday morning.
The three officers that were involved in the pursuit will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, the release said. OICI Protocol Team 3, which is the West Valley City Police Department, is leading the investigation into the deadly crash. This is the second time Salt Lake City police have invoked the “officer involved critical incident” protocol this year, the release said.
“This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers we face in our line of duty,” said Salt Lake police Chief Mike Brown in a statement. “Based on preliminary information, it appears our officers were responding to a rapidly unfolding situation. I am very proud of the work our officers do to keep our community — and each other — safe.”
Police believe the shooting may have happened after a large party near 900 South and State Street. Anyone with information on the case, including photos or videos, is asked to call 801-799-3000.
