Police shoot, wound armed man at Layton apartment complex

The law enforcement shooting is under investigation.

A Davis County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and seriously wounded a Layton man early Wednesday after authorities say he threatened officers with a rifle.

Layton officers had initially responded to the Layton Meadows Apartments apartment complex, located at 540 W. 14225 North, on an unrelated call at about 4 a.m. Wednesday when a man carrying a rifle came out onto a balcony and began yelling at them, according to police.

The Davis County deputy responded to assist Layton police with containing the scene, police said.

Together, the law enforcement officers tried to deescalate the situation for about an hour before the deputy shot and wounded the man, who reportedly aimed his weapon at the officers and other apartments, authorities say.

Police did not say what exactly prompted the deputy to open fire; how many shots were fired; or if the man, later identified as 31 year-old Nathan Barker, fired his rifle.

Barker was taken to a hospital in Layton in serious condition, then flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City. The shooting remains under investigation, with the Davis County “critical incident protocol” team leading it, Layton police said.

According to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune, it marked the 16th law enforcement shooting in Utah so far this year.
