Utah officers shoot, kill Salt Lake County man

Unified police had been called to the same home twice Wednesday.

A Salt Lake County man is dead after officers shot him late Wednesday while responding to a domestic disturbance, Sgt. Melody Cutler with the Unified Police Department said.

Police had been called to the same home twice Wednesday. First, just after 9 p.m., during a reported argument between 46-year-old Aaron Zimmerman and his girlfriend at the house near 7000 South, just east of the Mountain View Corridor.

Officers at the time determined that no crime had been committed and left without making any arrests, police said in a news release Thursday afternoon.

But later that night, around midnight, officers were called again to the home because the domestic disturbance had “escalated,” Cutler said.

Outside the home, Zimmerman “pulled a gun and our officers shot him,” Cutler said, adding that three officers were involved in the shooting, none of whom she identified.

The type of gun police say Zimmerman pulled was not specified. Cutler said it wasn’t immediately clear whether Zimmerman shot at police.

Cutler initially said the shooting was in Kearns, but a police news release later clarified that it unfolded in Salt Lake County.

The shooting is being investigated by an officer-involved “critical incident” team led by the Salt Lake City Police Department. All three officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, according to the Unified Police Department.

It marked the 15th law enforcement shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
