“The Utah Division of State Parks extends our condolences to the family and to all those grieving at this difficult time,” a statement read.

A GoFundMe campaign launched Monday morning described Walter as “a happy, rambunctious, 3-year-old with a big personality.”

“He loved Spiderman, trucks, boots and trains and was excited to start preschool,” the page continued. “His family and friends are devastated by this loss.”

As of Monday afternoon, the page had raised more than $11,000 to help with medical and funeral costs, as well as counseling and related expenses.

Echo State Park is near Coalville, about 50 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. The park offers camping, boating and fishing, though beach access is currently limited because of high water levels.
