Gas leak at 9th and 9th repaired after evacuations

The leak happened near an intersection that has been closed down for construction.

Businesses and residents in Salt Lake City’s 9th and 9th neighborhood were evacuated because of a gas leak Wednesday afternoon.

The gas leak was caused by construction work nearby, according to a tweet from the Salt Lake City Fire Department. Officials said it was repaired at around 3:40 p.m.

The intersection at 900 South and 900 East was recently shut down for construction, as a part of the 900 South Reconstruction Project, which aims to improve the 9-Line Trail.

All foot and vehicle traffic was being denied to the area Wednesday afternoon, as crews from Dominion Energy work to repair the leak, officials said.

It was unclear how many residents and businesses were evacuated, but road closures and evacuations were implemented within a half-block of 9th and 9th, Salt Lake City Police said in a tweet.

No injuries were reported.
