A Layton police officer accused of sending an ex-girlfriend dozens of texts and showing up at her home in uniform was charged Monday with stalking.
Austin Levi Christofferson, 33, with the Layton Police Department, had a six-month on-again, off-again relationship with a woman who told him the relationship was over on June 29 and asked him to leave her alone, according to a charging document in filed in 2nd District Court.
Instead, from June 29 to July 2, Christofferson sent about 68 text messages to the woman and called her 35 times, the document states.
On July 2, Christofferson sent a photo of him and the ex-girlfriend together with blood on it and a text that read, “You could have saved me,” the documents state. The woman told an investigator that the message made her feel unsafe as Christofferson had threatened to shoot himself if they broke up.
Between July 2 and 7, Christofferson sent the woman about 80 text messages and called her 29 times, according to a probable cause statement. On July 7, the woman came home to find flowers and notes from Christofferson on her porch, as well as a photo of the two of them together.
Between July 9 and 12, Christofferson sent the woman 29 messages, and she replied and told him to stop contacting her, according to the statement.
The woman also told an investigator that Christofferson had showed up at her home on multiple occasions in his police vehicle and uniform, which made her feel like she couldn’t report him “due to his influence with police,” according to the statement.
According to a news release from Layton Police Department, Christofferson was put on administrative leave and “relieved of his police authority and department-issued equipment pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Christofferson remains in custody and is being held without bail. An initial appearance in the case wasn’t immediately scheduled.
