Dangerous heat warnings and watches issued for much of Utah — including the Wasatch Front

Triple digits forecast for Sunday and Monday in Salt Lake City.

Excessive heat warnings and watches have been extended across much of Utah this weekend — including Salt Lake City and the rest of the Wasatch Front.

The National Weather Service, which earlier this week issued a heat watch in southern Utah, is now warning of “dangerously hot conditions” with temperatures up to 104 degrees in northern Utah from noon Saturday until 9 p.m. Monday.

The area includes Salt Lake City and much of Salt Lake County, Ogden and much of Weber County, Bountiful and much of Davis County, Provo and much of Utah County, and Tooele and all of Tooele County.

And there will be “minimal overnight relief” on Sunday night, with lows in the 70s in most locations, according to the weather service.

The extreme heat will “significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses,” especially for those working or recreating outside. The National Weather Service advises Utahns to drink plenty of fluids; stay indoors in air-conditioned rooms; check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors; and avoid leaving children and pets in unattended vehicles “under any circumstances.”

In the Salt Lake City area, temperatures will slightly below normal for this time of year on Friday, with a high of 91. But the forecast is for 95 on Saturday, 103 on Sunday and 102 on Monday. After falling back to the upper 90s Tuesday-Thursday, triple digit temperatures could return on Friday, July. 21.

There are also excessive heat warnings in southern Utah, including St. George, Zion National Park and Capitol Reef National Park. The normal high temperature at this time of year in St. George is 102 — the forecast calls for 109 on Friday, 112 on Saturday, 114 on Sunday, and 111 on Monday. And temperatures will remain 106-108 Tuesday-Friday.

Highs of 108-114 are expected in Zion National Park; 102-114 in Glen Canyon and Lake Powell; and 110-115 in lower Washington County. Overnight lows will be in the upper 70s and low 80s.
