Hit-and-run driver may have intentionally killed a man on scooter, Salt Lake City police say

Police are urging the driver of the car to contact them.

A 61-year-old man riding a scooter was hit and killed by a driver early Monday, and police believe it may have been no accident.

According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, detectives think the driver may have “intentionally hit the man on the scooter and left the scene without stopping.” Police had no description of the car or its driver as of Monday morning.

It’s unclear if the driver and the man on the scooter knew each other. Homicide detectives have joined the investigation.

At about 1:15 a.m, police received a report of a crash involving the car and a scooter near 1000 North and Topaz Drive. When officers arrived, they found the victim, whose name has not been released. Despite life-saving efforts, he died at the scene.

According to police, both the car and the scooter were traveling in the same direction on 1000 North when the car’s driver apparently did a U-turn to veer back into the same initial lane, hitting the man on the scooter.

Though police had no immediate description of the vehicle, investigators said it should have front-end damage. Detectives are seeking security camera footage from homes and businesses near the crash.

Police urge the driver to come forward and call 911 to surrender to police. The crash marked the sixth traffic fatality and is being investigated as the 11th homicide in Salt Lake City this year.

Anyone with information about the crash may call police at 801-799-3000 and reference case No. 23-144525.
