Man killed in shootout with Ogden officer, police say

It marked the second police shooting in Ogden within a week.

An Ogden officer shot and killed a man who opened fire on police early Tuesday after driving off from a traffic stop.

Ogden officers were initially dispatched to a disturbance call on the 100 block of 25th Street at 1:27 a.m. after reports of an individual with a gun, Ogden police Deputy Chief Jake Sube said Tuesday morning.

“Given the seriousness of the situation,” Sube said, multiple officers responded. As they were on their way to the scene, the man took off in a vehicle that turned out to be stolen, Sube said.

Officers tracked down the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near the 200 block of 17th Street. The man drove off from the traffic stop, Sube said, but officers soon found the car near the 700 block of 8th Street.

When officers arrived, the man got out of the vehicle and began firing rounds at two officers, who were still inside their vehicles, Sube said.

One of those officers was able to get out of his car and return fire, Sube said. The man died at the scene.

Police did not identify the man killed Tuesday morning, pending the notification of family members. The officer who opened fire on the man also was not identified.

“We are extremely relieved that none of the officers were injured during this dangerous encounter,” Sube said.

The Ogden Police Department is turning the police shooting investigation over to the Weber-Morgan “critical incident task force,” Sube said.

The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, per department protocol. “This is standard procedure designed to ensure the integrity of the investigation while also protecting the officer’s well being after such a traumatic incident,” Sube said.

Police did not identify the officer who opened fire on the man Tuesday. Further details were not available.
