A man suspected of DUI has been hospitalized after he was shot by a West Valley City police officer on Thursday night.
According to police, at 10:31 p.m., the officer called in to report that he was trying to stop a driver in a white van near 2400 S. Redwood Road who appeared to be driving while intoxicated.
The driver did not pull over, and crashed when he “failed to negotiate” a turn from Redwood Road onto eastbound State Road 201. At 10:34 p.m., the officer reported that he had shot the man.
Police have released few details about what happened. The man, whose name has not been released, was injured and taken to a hospital. His condition was unknown as of Friday evening.
According to police, a gun “believed to belong” to the man was found at the scene. The officer was not injured.
Police did not say if the man fired a gun, or how many times the officer fired.
The shooting is being investigated by the West Jordan Police Department.
Thursday’s shooting marked the eighth police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
