The body of a 14-year-old boy was recovered Monday night after he fell through the ice and into the water of a Utah reservoir.
According to Tooele City Police, the 14-year-old, as well as an 18-year-old male and 16-year-old male were on the ice at Settlement Canyon Reservoir around 7 p.m. when the 14 and 18-year-olds fell through the ice.
"The 16-year-old came up to the road here at the top of the reservoir and had a citizen call and that’s kind of what started it,” Lt. Jeremy Hansen with the Tooele City Police Department explained.
The 18-year-old was able to get out of the water but the 14-year-old was not able to escape.
A police officer who responded to help fell through the ice as well, and another officer managed to get him out. Two firefighters also fell through, but only partially.
Lt. Hansen explained the ice wasn’t as thick as it needed to be for people to be out on it, which made efforts difficult.
“When officers got here two officers did go out on the ice...one actually fell all the way through,” he said. “The other officers on scene helped him back up on top of the ice. He was warmed up in the back of the ambulance and is fine. So a couple of firefighters have partially fallen through as well. So the ice is not thick at all and it’s creating issues for the recovery effort itself.”
A dive team was called in late Monday night to help with recovery in the icy water and freezing cold temperatures. A medical helicopter as well as a helicopter from the Department of Public Safety was also present to help with the recovery.
The body of the 14-year-old was recovered just after midnight on Monday night, and details about his identity were not made available.
Officials are still investigating what the teens were doing on the ice and their relationships.
