Ice climber ‘fortunate’ after 40-foot fall near Bridal Veil Falls

The man’s anchor system stopped him from falling any farther.

A 29-year-old man is expected to make a full recovery after falling about 40 feet Monday while ice climbing in Provo Canyon.

“They were fortunate it didn’t turn out worse than it did,” said Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities were alerted at 11:09 a.m. Monday that the ice climber had fallen near Bridal Veil Falls. Cannon said a foothold gave way, causing the fall, but luckily the man’s anchor system stopped him from falling any farther than 40 feet.

He suffered a broken arm, a back injury, and most likely a mild head injury, Cannon said.

A helicopter with the Utah Department of Public Safety helped get the man safely down the mountain in a little less than three hours, Cannon said. He was then taken to Utah Valley Hospital for treatment.

The man was well-prepared and experienced, Cannon said. No further details regarding his condition were available Tuesday afternoon.
