2 Utah teens charged in killing of another teen outside Millcreek 7-Eleven

The fatal shooting unfolded early Nov. 11.

Two teenagers believed to be affiliated with a “criminal gang” have been charged with killing an 18-year-old outside a Millcreek convenience store earlier this month, court records show.

Salman F. Ahmed, 19, of Salt Lake City, and Houssein Musse, 18, each were charged Monday in 3rd District Court with one count of murder, three counts of felony discharge of a firearm, and one count of obstruction of justice in the Nov. 11 killing of Talib Ahmed.

According to police, a witness reported that two groups of males arrived at the 7-Eleven at 4051 S. State St. in separate vehicles shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. Surveillance video first showed a white Lexus pull up to the gas pumps.

Shortly after, a black Chrysler 300 pulled in, drove around the Lexus and also parked at the pumps, the footage showed. Salman Ahmed and Musse then got out of the Chrysler and approached the Lexus.

The video then showed the eventual victim, Talib Ahmed, get out of the Lexus and go into the store, followed by Salman Ahmed and Musse.

A short time later, all three exited the store and headed to the north side of the building, where the shooting took place.

As the shooting unfolded, the footage showed three more males get out of the Lexus and run toward the scene, along with a fourth male who ran out of the 7-Eleven. The first three males carried Talib Ahmed to the Lexus and drove off; the Chrysler drove away, leaving Salman Ahmed and Musse behind, charging documents state.

Talib Ahmed was driven to Intermountain Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. According to a state medical examiner, he suffered “at least” four gunshot wounds, including two to the head.

The surveillance video showed Salman Ahmed and Musse go to a nearby automotive store before returning to the 7-Eleven, according to police. When Unified Police officers arrived, Musse and Salman Ahmed approached them with their hands in the air.

Salman Ahmed, who had been shot in the abdomen, dropped to the ground. According to police, Musse refused to answer questions and would not surrender a bag around his neck. The bag was confiscated by an officer and searched after a warrant was obtained; it contained ammunition that matched some of the shell casings found in the parking lot, charging documents state.

A few hours later, the owner of the automotive shop near the 7-Eleven found two guns underneath a car there, police said.

According to a probable cause statement, Salman Ahmed and Musse “are associated with the Safari/KOG (Knock Off Gang), a criminal street gang.” It’s unclear if their alleged gang affiliation was a factor in the shooting.

Salman Ahmed was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated for his gunshot wound and later released. He and Musse are both being held without bail in the Salt Lake County jail.
