Mitt Romney could make millions as he sells his Deer Valley home

Utah senator is asking $11.5M for this 8,730-square-foot lodge with six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a spacious deck and a private ski tunnel.

Mitt Romney has put his home near Deer Valley Resort up for sale. Asking price: $11.5 million.

The Republican senator’s luxury alpine lodge at 6730 Silver Lake Drive in Park City sits near Deer Valley’s Success ski sun, and has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms spread over 8,730 square feet.

Barely 10 days on the market, the home reportedly already has an offer, the real estate website Zillow reported as of Monday.

The high-end log chalet and its open floor plan offer “soaring ceilings, walls of windows, six suites including two extensive bunk rooms, multiple balconies and an elevator to service the loft and lower levels,” according to the property listing by Summit Sotheby’s International Realty.

Located on a half-acre of mountainside, the property also sounds like one of the state’s top-flight private residences for outdoor recreation. It boasts a private ski tunnel to a family-friendly and regularly groomed “green” ski run, easy access to biking and hiking trails and multiple balconies, including a spacious deck with a hot tub, fire pit and sweeping views of the Wasatch Mountains — used, the property listing says, “to enjoy lunch or hot chocolate after a morning on the mountain.”

Built in 1991, the slope-side lodge was designed by renowned Utah architect Fred Babcock and bought by the Romneys in 2013, a year after the Republican’s unsuccessful White House bid against President Barack Obama. Even in defeat, though, Romney made history as the first Latter-day Saint to top a major party’s presidential ticket.

Property records indicate the home is officially owned — as of Monday — by Deer Valley SR LLC, a company that other records show is managed by Romney’s wife, Ann.

The Utah senator’s press secretary, Arielle Mueller, declined to comment Monday.

Though Romney grew up in Detroit, he is a skiing enthusiast and headed the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The family has owned properties in the Park City area off and on for decades, records and news reports indicate, including another Deer Valley home sold in 2009 as Romney prepared for his second White House run.

The Utah Republican and former Massachusetts governor sold a beachfront home La Jolla, Calif., in July 2021 for a reported $23.5 million. That property got caught up in controversy during his 2012 presidential quest when opponents sought to portray him as an out-of-touch politician for wanting to build a “car elevator” in the home.

Real estate brokers Kerry Oman, a Draper-based agent for Summit Sotheby’s, and Thomas Wright, a Park City-based agent for the same firm who was a Republican candidate for Utah governor in 2020, are the listing agents for the Deer Valley property.

Reached Friday, Oman declined to identify or share any details about the owners or what was motivating the sale, except to call them “just wonderful sellers.”

But Oman rhapsodized about the home. Though unassuming from the front, he said, “it’s a really special property. It’s really a ski lodge, with that ‘you’re in the mountains’ feel.”

Much of the new residential construction in Park City, he said, “is all going toward the modern lodge style, so it’s really refreshing to have a property come to market with more of a rustic feel, with beautiful woodwork and excellent detail.” It also has undergone some recent renovations.

Other Romney properties

Utah is a nondisclosure state when it comes to property sales prices, but the home was listed for $8.9 million in 2013, when the Romneys bought it.

Around the same time, they also acquired two adjoining lots in Holladay and built a 5,900-square-foot home there, with multiple lawns and terraces, a fountain, a fire pit, a gazebo and an outdoor spa accessible from the master bathroom.

That property drew headlines after city-approved architectural drawings revealed a small hidden room accessed by a swiveling bookshelf in the home’s study.

Records show the family still owns that property under another company, ADR Holdings, which also lists Ann as a principal and uses the same mailing address as Deer Valley SR LLC.

The Romneys recently sold a condominium in Belmont, Mass., but retain a vacation home in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee and an abode in the Washington, D.C., area.
