Sweltering temperatures are expected for the upcoming Pioneer Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
In Salt Lake City, it will be about 98 degrees Thursday; 100 on Friday; 97 on Saturday (the day of the parade); 98 on Sunday (Pioneer Day); and 96 on Monday (the observed state holiday).
That’s about normal for high temperatures this time of year — about 95-96 degrees. For the past 10 years, the average high temperature for the Saturday parade’s date, July 23, has been 96 degrees.
It’s been about the same on July 24: An average high of 97 over the past 10 years; 95 over the past five years. But no triple digits.
It will, of course, be cooler than 97 at 9 a.m. on Saturday, when the parade starts. But it will likely be in at least the low 90s before the parade is over. And it will be hotter than that on Salt Lake City streets and sidewalks. The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies.
There is no rain in the weekend forecast. After a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday evening, no precipitation is expected through Monday.
Temperatures will similarly be sweltering across Utah this weekend — in the mid- to upper 90s in Provo and Logan; the high 80s to low 90s in Park City; the low to mid-90s in Cedar City; and 101-109 in Moab.
(National Weather Service) An excessive heat warning has been issued for southernmost Utah on Thursday and Friday.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for southern Utah that begins at noon Thursday and stretches until 9 p.m. Friday.

In St. George, the forecast high is 109 on Thursday and Friday, 107 on Saturday, 103 on Sunday and 100 on Monday. The normal high for this time of year is 102.
There is no precipitation in the forecast there until Monday, which carries a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms.
