Ogden police arrest suspect accused of robbing, fatally shooting man on walk

The killing unfolded on June 12.

Ogden police have arrested a 19-year-old who allegedly shot a man to death last month as he was walking and stole his cellphone, court records indicate.

On June 12, the victim — whose name has not been released — was found dead in the roadway at 100 Patterson Street. He had been shot twice, and his cellphone was missing, police said.

According to a probable cause statement, police received a tip July 7 identifying a 19-year-old man as the shooter. The suspect was taken into custody and told police that he and another person saw the victim walking down the street and decided to rob him.

The suspect also told police he shot the victim and took his phone, records state.

The location history of the suspect’s phone “mirrored the travel of the victim’s phone from the time it was taken,” according to the probable cause statement. The suspect told police he later destroyed the victim’s phone. He also told police he was using methamphetamine when he killed the victim.

The 19-year-old was booked into the Weber County jail for investigation of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, obstruction of justice and possession and use of a gun by a restricted person. He is being held without bail.

The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name a suspect until he has been charged with a crime.
