20-year-old man killed in ‘brazen’ shooting at Magna apartment complex

Authorities are still looking for a suspect.

Police are investigating after a 20-year-old man was shot to death at a Magna apartment complex on Friday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired at Colony Farms Apartments in Magna near 7250 W. 2600 South at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, said Unified Police detective Kevin Mallory.

Upon arrival, police found a body with multiple gunshot wounds in the driver’s seat of a vehicle. The man has been identified as Magna resident Fernando Ruesga, according to Unified Police.

Mallory said investigators’ only lead at this time is a report of a man leaving the scene at a “high rate of speed” shortly after the shooting. Officers canvassed the apartment complex and confirmed there were no other victims in the shooting.

Mallory said that there’s no indication the shooting was random, and he does not believe there is an immediate public safety risk.

“This is a very [...] brazen crime that happened in broad daylight,” Mallory said. “We value people who call 911, [and] who are willing to make themselves available to try and gather information because it’s our partnership with the communities and working with witnesses [...] that helps us solve these types of crimes.”
