Fast-moving storm expected in northern Utah on Sunday

Expect travel difficulties on mountain routes through early afternoon.

A fast-moving storm will be making its way through northern Utah on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service, bringing a chance of rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains.

Utahns can expect travel difficulties on mountain routes through early afternoon, when the weather service predicts the heaviest precipitation.

The weather service predicts 4 to 8 inches of snow in the mountains of northern Utah, with moderate snowfall until late evening. Possible light accumulations are expected in the valleys, the forecast indicated.

There is also “considerable” avalanche danger in the Wasatch Front, the western Uinta Mountains, and on the Manti-Skyline plateau in central Utah, according to the Utah Avalanche Center. Human-triggered avalanches of 2 to 3 feet are likely until 6 a.m. on Monday. This does not include ski areas and highways.

On Saturday, one skier was hospitalized after two avalanches occurred in Big Cottonwood Canyon, one in the Silver Fork area and the other near Mats Basin. Authorities didn’t provide any updates on his condition on Sunday afternoon.

Next week the forecast indicates a high of 40 on Monday in Salt Lake City, 48 on Tuesday — with overnight rain and snow — and 41 on Wednesday, with a 30% chance of snow, the weather service said.
