Ways Utahns can support Ukraine as Russia’s invasion continues

Humanitarian aid need skyrockets as thousands of Ukrainians’ flee the country.

Millions of Ukrainians woke up last week to explosions and aircraft hums reverberating throughout Ukraine as Russia attempted to take control of the country. In response to the attacks, thousands of Ukrainian citizens are fleeing to neighboring countries to seek safety. Russia’s aggression sparked an international outcry, prompting countries like Poland and Hungary to open their borders to Ukrainian refugees.

Current estimates show 500,000 Ukrainians have left the county and U.S. officials and humanitarian groups say the number could reach 1 to 5 million.

Utah leaders have condemned the violence perpetrated by Russia. Hundreds of Utahns gathered at the Capitol on Saturday in protest of Russia’s invasion. Gov. Spencer Cox even issued an executive order to remove Russian-brand booze from state liquor stores.

It’s currently unclear if Utah will be welcoming Ukrainian citizens seeking refuge. However, national and international humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to send aid to Ukraine and surrounding countries.

If the events unfolding in Ukraine strike a cord, here are six organizations you can donate to that are rallying to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine:

The Global Empowerment Mission (GEM)

The GEM Bstrong team has deployed to Medyka, Poland, on the border of Ukraine, and opened a “welcome center” for Ukrainians who are fleeing. The organization is helping purchase transportation for those looking to leave for another country where they have friends and family. So far, GEM has relocated 100,000 women and children from the Poland border. The organization is also sending aid, such as hygiene kits, to Medyka.

Nova Ukraine

Nova Ukraine is an American nonprofit that works closely with Ukrainian-based organizations and volunteers to educate the U.S. about the country and send supplies to vulnerable populations throughout Ukraine.

Nova Ukraine is mobilizing to deliver humanitarian products like baby food and essential items for hospitals.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC)

IRC is known for helping residents escape conflict countries and assisting with resettlement. They provide families with the necessary resources to help adjust to a new place, and sometimes culture. The IRC is in Poland currently, providing food and water to Ukriainans crossing the border. Additionally, the IRC in Salt Lake City has helped Afghan refugees acclimate to life in Utah.

Polish Center for International Aid (PCPM)

This international humanitarian organization is gathering essential supplies for Ukrainians leaving or living in attacked areas, such as generators, power banks and flashlights. PCPM says the most pressing need is donations to secure equipment for areas that have lost power and gas. Trained psychology professionals from Kharkiv are also providing support for children and families under fire.

Voices of Children

The Voice of Children Foundation is a Ukrainian organization that provides psychological and psychosocial support for children experiencing war trauma. Voice of Children employees are working in shelters around the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine last week, the foundation has received immense contributions from around the world. Due to the sheer volume, Voice of Children says they’re behind processing donations and will catch up as soon as possible.
